If  a horns says "just rebuilt", then it's ready to go, saxes that say "scheduled for a rebuild" are waiting for the work to be done, but it will be included in the posted price.  If a sax says "ON TRIAL" someone is taking advantage of the "Three Day Trial" policy (See Info and Orders page).

BUESCHER:

a rare classic from Sarge's Collection (his description):

1934 Buescher "Early" Aristocrat Tenor:

aristo268a.jpg (545528 bytes) aristo268b.jpg (566869 bytes) aristo268c.jpg (527440 bytes) aristo268d.jpg (466259 bytes) aristo268e.jpg (346761 bytes) aristo268f.jpg (445996 bytes)

Sarge's words: Rare early version of the Aristo, (with traits of TrueTone and Aristo) with the small bell for a more focused, sweeter sound. Original lacquer is good, over 80% present. Crisp, sharp beautiful Art Deco engraving.  Think Johnny  Hodges tone.  Serial # 268,xxx, built about 1934. No major damage ever done to it.  Neck looks great no pull down thanks to the art deco brace The snap in resonator system is intact, as are the Norton springs.  I did a Premium Buescher snap in pad rebuild on it and was so pleased with the sound... I have tried it with several mouthpiece and it has a number of amazing tones, but most impressive was with my Otto Link "slant signature" hard rubber piece.  The amount of volume/output with this sax is about double what you'd expect for a late thirties horn... very close to a "The Martin Tenor" in power, but then i put a Link Master on it and it went totally airy and smooth with a centered warm tone.  really versatile.

This is probably built more for the collector, not the player--old buescher Tranny traits, side pip location experiments affect tuning. AND "No", the mouthpiece is not included, sorry, it's one of Sarge's and isn't for sale. If just looked cool in the photos. CASE: is the original Buescher case, purple interior. It's in good/great shape, minor edge frays but the condition matches the love of the sax's good condition.

still for sale as of 3-9-2015

In original lacquer, these are hard to find in original (!) shape and well respected tenors. ser# 278K, They are versatile, warm sounding, comfortable playing tenors, with better intonation than most, even including Selmer. Has buescher snap-in pad system and gold norton springs. I  need to burnish out several very dents in the bow, a few on the back tube and neck as well; but it's a good looking sax with limited solder points. And with a complete rebuild, is will play as nice as it looks.  They have a small bore/bell design that can really punch through with the right mouthpiece. Comes in original Buescher hard case in ok condition, rope handle replacement--latches do latch but the triggers are gone. a little metal prick (car keys) will open it right up. :)  It has it's original pads and snap in domes everywhere, so i will do a faithful Buescher snap in rebuild, with metal backed pads to make it feel original.

(On Consignment--Sarge Rebuild 2009, plays great)Another superb tenor, in the 307,xxx range, Original Lacquer at 85%. They are versatile, warm sounding, comfortable playing tenors, with better intonation than most, even including Selmer. My client has decided to thin his herd of saxes (even after having other pro players love this sax!). It received a faithful Buescher snap in rebuild, with metal backed pads to make it feel original in 2009 by The Sarge. The owner ordered a custom Walt Johnson case ($450!) that is sized for the Big B--it will not fit a Mark VI--it is a buescher padding template. I would like to sell them as a pair. However, I may entertain an option to try to swap out for another case.

Serial number 325,180 makes it a 1948 or so.  The top hat is a lovely horn to look at, or play.  It has a warmer sound and does a beautiful job with ballads, but is flexible enough to do jazz with the right mouthpiece.  i've had this one quite a while... it's real nice, but it's not mint, so i don't mind taking to some of the blues clubs we play.  there were a few chair dents in the bow and when i smoothed them, they stayed a little ripple-y... but i don't mind at all.  The engravings are just a joy to look at, i often find myself mesmerized by them.  I  rebuilt it with a premium rebuild, to improve the feel, with teflon and ultrasuede... my pad selection for this one was Saxgourmet pads and I kept the stock snap-in metal resonators intact, throughout.  I like to play it with this mouthpiece below, the two make a super rich/fat combination of tones:

Chadd comments: properly rebuilt with a custom Black pad rebuild with original snaps (pads shellac/glued in) . A HUGE TONE! I was REALLY planning to keep this one.

Serial #340,000 (too cool not to list the full number).  This sax is Original Finish, and was a special sax that was repaired by the master, Sarge (WWS creator).  It was given a Full Buescher Rebuild by Sarge and was not played much; it received Buescher metal-backed pads for a traditional rebuild and natural cork throughout. Only negative to mention is that one snap went missing in time (F3, too common). Consider the pads: "like new!"  CASE: The original case is in great shape to match the shine of the sax. The sax will need minor tune-ups that I'll include in the price.

SOUND: warmth, sultry, very very close to the Big B(series II), just add a bit more treble tones in the clearness of tone.

SOLD One of the best bargain saxes!

1954 Buescher "Aristocrat", series 3, [156] (Flower) Tenor:

Buescher156-347k_002.JPG (1299563 bytes)Another superb tenor, in the 347,xxx range, Original Lacquer at 90%. They are versatile, warm sounding, comfortable playing tenors, with better intonation than most, even including Selmer. It received newer pads elsewhere; it feels wrong to tear them out even though they are used with a  "medium" life-rating. They have lots of life left! The Snap-in Pad system is 100% intact, as well as the Gold Norton Springs. It has the original Buescher box case, that looks aged, but in suitable working order.
I'll be working on this one to improve the cosmetics where I can (minor dent work in the bottom bow, red rust removal), quieting oils and adjustments throughout. SOUND: Warm, sultry-resonance, very very close to the "Big B"-series 2 right before it, just add a bit more treble clearness to the tone. I think these are some of the most undervalued saxes on the vintage market!  All included for the competitive price of:

1967 Buescher 400 Tenor Sax:  This is a nice 400 model made about a year after the Selmer takeover ser. # 420,xxx.  The finish is original and to me, looks very handsome.  It has the same body, neck with underslung octave mechanism and keywork as the famous older brother the "Top Hat" model, but with nickel plated keys.  Buescher still made great 400's through the sixties, this one was made appx. 1967.  It has a warm centered tone, but can be pushed hard with a metal mouthpiece.  The Lacquer is original and about 85%, but the neck and the inside of the bell are nearly worn to bare brass.  I plan burnish out a few dents and to do a complete Buescher style rebuild and it will go for

1972 Buffet Super Dynaction Tenor (w/ high F#) EXCELLENT Original Lacquer is about 98% although there are some scratches (see pics)--Beautiful Speckled Lacquer version! There are no pings, dents, or major scratches to report. one, ONLY one post is dented into the body (C# tube saddle). These compare very favorably to the famed Selmer Mark VI, usually ranked #2.  Known for its rich tone and smooth action it is a well designed heavy horn, it keeps it's adjustment well and is very reliable.  The serial number is 18,3xx, which means it was made in 1972.  the 70's models had a little more edge and some folks prefer them for that trait.  Included is the original Buffet hard case which is still in excellent shape to match (except the loss of the main handle, hmmm)--side handle is intact. It will great a "French Standard" rebuild with flat metal resonators to mimic the original setup and natural cork throughout.

1975 Buffet (Paris) Crampon S-1 This rare Buffet S-1 looks and played absolutely great on arrival but the pads were a big mix bag of old and new ones. The whole horn is pretty clean and is original. we can see a few original acid bleeds (D key cup, C# post...), includes yamaha replacement case. Known for its well design, these heavy horns keep adjustment well and are very reliable, also excellent intonation and crazy gadgets on the Eb/C rocker, Low Bb table, High F#, & opt. The serial number is 23,9xx, which means it was made in 1975.  the 70's model Buffets had a little more edge and some folks prefer them for that trait. The S-1 is actually quite brighter and bolder than the previous SDAs; so they're a cross between the Buffet SDA & a King Super 20. The serial number is 26,0xx, which means it was made in 1976.  the 70's model Buffets had a little more edge and some folks prefer them for that trait. The S-1 is actually quite brighter and bolder than the previous SDAs; so they're a cross between the Buffet SDA & a King Super 20 but lean towards the French sound.

1925 Silver Conn Wonder/"Chu Berry" Transitional Tenor:  Ser.# m166,xxx.  Another Wonder II (aka a "Chu") with nailfile G#, rolled tone holes, everything we love.  Original Silver plate model, in good shape with about 80% remaining, no major body damage to mention either, Goldwash bell shows some heavy wear. Consider having us replate that as part of the process. This is a transitional Chu, one of the first off the line, because it has some Wonder I parts (high Eb). But it has the nailfile G# so you can be certain you get that Chu sound.  Great story with this one: one owner horn! He played around the world via the cruise ships. he put stickers on the original case, which is in good shape by the way, at all the stops he had--Beijing, Hong Kong, Seattle, ...etc. This thing is covered. Too cool! Now, if you've never played a Chu, they are stunningly powerful tenors...big fat sound top to bottom.  Ergos are not that great, but i know a lot of players that play them in spite of the 20's design and would never switch to a Selmer.   It will get a full repad, with a Conn-style, standard repad (aka, our vintage rebuild).

OK!, this great sax that has seen better days. These are great players, so I wanted to make it someone's perfect gig sax! AND improve the cosmetics! Slightly abused, but nothing major. LET'S MAKE IT AWESOME.

Named: "Hotrod", Ser.# m211,xxx. another great "Chu" in original silver, with gold wash bell (in good shape) with nailfile G#, rolled tone holes, everything we love. Overall it's in good condition with minor wear only on a few key tops and rods! Upon initial inspection, there was one main 'damage story' in its past: the lower edge looks to have taken a knock, the bell-to-body brace needs resoldered, the rear body tube will need aligned to the bow (de-soldered damage), and address the front knock, address dents to the high palm keys, messy solders, remove the unnecessary lyre holder, The Front F rocker arm went missing but I'll fabricate a replacement of some sort (if not, replace it with a spare one!).  Just call her by Name: "Hot Rod".

Now, if you've never played a Chu, they are stunningly powerful tenors...big fat sound top to bottom.  Ergos are not that great, but I know a lot of players that play them in spite of the 20's design and would never switch to a Selmer.

1929-30 silver Conn New Wonder II "Chu Berry"-Transitional Tenor: Ser.# m236,xxx. (transitional era 235k-262k) Excellent "Chu" in original silver, with gold wash bell (in excellent shape) with nailfile G#, rolled tone holes, everything we love. I shined up a few spots for the photos to show the silver is in great shape from its 80yrs! Overall it's in excellent condition with minor wear only on a few key tops and rods! Upon initial inspection, there are NO solder repairs to mention! no bell-to-body damage either.  Now, if you've never played a Chu, they are stunningly powerful tenors...big fat sound top to bottom.  Ergos are not that great, but i know a lot of players that play them in spite of the 20's design and would never switch to a Selmer. I did check the Chu tuning flaw in the palm keys (tend to play flat) and this one plays far better in tune that many others I've compared!  It is due to the later serial # and slight factory improvements into this "transitional" era. You will notice a few keys that started to gain 10M traits (high E has the ergo curve). It has very minor dings and only 2 small dents that I will burnish out during the rebuild. It has the original silver end cap and Conn, original wood case with purple interior in good shape!  It will get a standard "Vintage Conn" style rebuild (aka my Vintage Standard) with tan pads, flat metal resos and I'm selling it for:

Prime era 10m in original lacquer, S# 306,843.  the thing is 30-m's and 10-m's are so different , i felt like i need to have both... the 30m is more of a jazz horn and the 10m works better for my rockin' R&B stuff.  It has never seen any notable body damage, although some minor dents may have been rolled out before i got her.   Rolled tone holes, Naked Lady engraving.  The neck is slightly pulled down, i corrected that and eventually i will do a Conn Style Premium Rebuild, with Saxgourmet Kangaroo pads and flat metal resonators.  The premium upgrade, with Teflon and Ultrasuede, will really do a lot to smooth out the action on her.

Chadd comments: This one is a real screamer. Setup with oversized flat metal resonators, and the Black Saxgourmet Roo pads. Just the real deal here, everything you'd expect from the fable of 10M's.

Conn 10M, "Naked Lady" 1945 Original Silver Plate:  serial number 312xxx, all original and never any major damage, just tarnished silver in the 'before' photos. Excellent % of original silver intact! One small dent in the bell which should burnish out pretty nice.  This one has the rolled tone holes and everything you'd expect from a '40's Conn... including a really big sound.  The silver plate is original but worn in a few regular contact spots, the gold in the bell looks decent--request a layer of 24k Gold to really regain some pizzazz ($96).  It's big, lush and warm, with a hard rubber mpce, and can really wail, with a metal mouthpiece. If you're familiar with early Conns, you know they have a large cult following. Comes with original Conn rectangle hard case in good shape suitable for use.   We we give this a Vintage Conn rebuild with tan pads and flat metal resonators like it originally had.

We love connecting to our customers. Here's the new guide to get the ball rolling.

GUARDALA:

Another really fantastic German sax is a B&S stencil, for Dave Guardala. I have been searching  for a early serial number Guardala model 500 for some time.  The craftsmanship is awesome on these horns.  Ergonomics are up there with Keilwerth and Selmer, the materials used are far above par.  The sound is unique and falls somewhere in-between a Conn "Chu" Tenor and a Keilwerth SX90R.  Here is Sarge's description for this particular Tenor:

Dave Guardala model DG500SP Silver Plate Tenor:  This Uber-professional level Bb Tenor saxophone is fabricated and hand made from 72% formulated Copper alloy yellow brass with full rib post construction and hand hammered bell. All rods are solid nickel silver with stainless steel screws, springs are tempered blue steel and authentic Mother of Pearl key buttons are used throughout. I repadded it myself, with Saxgourmet pads and nickel plated, brass rivetless, domed resonators.  All the Guardala extras come standard, like hand engraving on the bell (not laser engraved like the later made Guardala's), high F#, plus extensive fine tuning key adjustment screws at all critical points. This horn has triple silver plating finish with meticulous fancy hand engraving on the bell. Upper and lower key stacks are ergonomically designed for smooth, accurate and positive digital feel.

The serial number is below 4000 ( 00382x, Made in Germany). This sax was manufactured long before Dave Guardala's association with LA Sax started  (that is, the "LA SAX" Laser engraved saxes bearing his name, after B&S folded), and LA Saxes compromises in the quality of the product began appearing.  Don't be tricked, the DG500's are the real thing, serial numbers will differentiate the B&S models from the LA sax  ones.   The mouthpiece (in the pics) is sarge's and is not for sale or includedSilver models are estimated to be 20% higher in resale value than lacquered brass.  Available with original "faux alligator" case for

The mouthpiece (in the pics) is sarge's and is not for sale or included.  I never knew Sarge to even play this one and the set up is with tan pads and metal domed resos with rivet (like modern selmer). The Silver Keys are tarnishing a bit from hanging on the wall (vs these shiny pics). I will give them a cleaning for the buyer. ONE COSMETIC FLAW to mention at the moment, pending a thorough look-over: there is 1 minor bell ding/dent, sadly--in the outer left, inside by the lip. I will have to find a nice case for her. :)

SOLD The mouthpiece (in the pics) is sarge's and is not for sale or included.

1956 (Dörfler & Jörka) H. Gênet tenor:

(Thanks to my friend, Helen @ BassicSax for identification help!) Sweet! Although it looks like a  vintage keilwerth, oops I mean, Dörfler & Jörka stencil! Ser#11,1xx dates it to the 1956-9, and #s match on the neck and body. "Made in Western Germany" stamped on the back and many other similar components to match New King and Tone King models: grooved pants guard, key designs, bell flare and I fully expect that JK tone but more focus in the narrower bell! ROLLED TONE HOLES too. Overall the horn is in great shape and no major damage ever. It has some chair dings that will get burnished out during a rebuild. It is original lacquer at 85%. I like the pearl octave thumb rest (large for comfort). :)   It will get a "French Standard" rebuild,  using large flat metal reso's (aka, a vintage rebuild). It comes in a modern, molded, zipper case--like a cheaper protec copy--the zippers work and the JK fits! (often hard to find a case for JK bells). With a rebuild included, it should sell quickly for a ridiculously low price of:

1969 Keilwerth King Tempo tenor: hmmm... a great history piece here!--tricky Names and Dating. with Ser#64,xxx + #135x, JK dating dates the first it to the 1969, but the second number is lower than normal for D&J.  Add in the late 70s King logo (blended with SML which D&J had associations with), layout resembling more JK plus other pieces, and after more research and conferring with my friend Helen at BassicSax: [It's a full-blooded Keilwerth!]. Overall the horn is good enough shape to restore. She's growing some 'green', which I hate, so that will disappear! missing the original pants guard, sadly; also there is a loose post (still there to solder repair) and a lost screw to low C# rod. I'll address those during the rebuild.  It has several dings/dents that will get burnished out during a rebuild, bell lip looks rough but will round out and improve. It is original lacquer at 70%. The overall layout is quite nice/modern.  It will get a "French Standard" rebuild,  using large domed metal reso's (aka, a vintage rebuild in line with a JK design). The current case is original and disgusting. HA! So that will have get upgraded (included!). With a rebuild included, it should sell quickly for a low price of:

Keilwerth TONE KING:   S# 55,xxx, nice top of the line Keilwerth, with high F# key, made the same time as the Couf Superba 1.  These are noted for a very big, warm sound that is full of harmonics and body.  Made about 1966, in the very same location, by the same workers as the Couf Superba 1 and 2.   I have seen Superba Ones with the serial number 51,xxx, so both of these models were made at the same time.  There are a few small differences, like the bell to body brace, the strap hook and the right hand thumbhook, but the sound is identical and the mechanics are too, as close as i can tell... early Couf's even had the plastic pants guard.  I have Just Finished a "French Standard" rebuild,  using large flat metal reso's (aka, a vintage rebuild). Comes in a used, SKB molded hard case.

a rare classic from Sarge's Collection (his description):

1959 Keilwerth "ToneKing" Tenor:

JKTKT1.JPG (166293 bytes)JKTKT2.JPG (172308 bytes)JKTKT3.JPG (117120 bytes)JKTKT4.JPG (150080 bytes)  This Tenor was identical to the "New King" model, but for one added key, a high F# Gizmo key... for this reason, JK decided to market the Tone King as the "Pro" model and the New King as the Standard.  Serial # 37,xxx, it was built in about 1959, they only made Pro models during these years.  These are supremely warm and smoky,  jazzy horns, built solid like a tank, just heavy and beefy... and the sound was like that too.  Keywork was great and ideas were stolen from almost every great pro horn to make this one.  The neck tightening screw is like a Martin, the toneholes are rolled like a Conn, G#/Bb cluster is similar to a Selmer SBA...  these can stand with any other horn from this era.  Highly undervalued, should be worth 4000.00, i have seen nice examples like this one go for 2500.00... but hey, they are rare too, and you know what happens to rare tenors.  I rebuilt it with Saxgourmet pads and Resotech slightly domed, Solid silver resonators.

Chadd comments: I'm scared to touch these ones with the plastic guard. But I like the look! It's like watching a machine in action! SOUND!!! This sax has HUGE Power! The Treble boost CUTS through! I need a Sound File to prove this!

S#196,xxx, superb sounding earlier zephyr.  Original Lacquer is very good, over 80%, matching serial number on the neck, thumb hook resoldered.  The earlier the Zephyr, the darker and more vintage the tone, this one will sound beautiful.  It's not mint, she has had her share of minor dings and dents--these will get burnished out and removed as best as I can offer. She is solid as a rock and will make a great horn for someone who can appreciate that sound!  Three ring strap hook, G# trill key, eyebrow keyguards, square button accents on this early series. These vintage guys do have some 'challenging' tuning up in the high A-B-C range. A vintage mouthpiece has helped this notably Comes with newer, rectangle wood case in great shape (it reminds me of the 70s vito era). It will get a "French Standard" rebuild, but substituted large flat metal reso's, for the selmer style plastic ones (aka, a WWS Vintage Standard Rebuild).

I want to offer this one as a very affordable "deal of the Spring"

S# is 308,xxx which makes it circa 1950. This is in that prime serial number range! It has the double socket neck with matching #s, improved G# table, many features you would find on the 50's King Super 20.  Original lacquer is 85% intact with a few small areas that have worn to brass.  a few typical small dings and pings, 2 main dents, which i will do my best to remove. Otherwise no major damage. She will be a rockin' tenor. These are great for all music but many R&R players have come to love them. Comes with original tweed case where 2 or 3 latches need attention. I will either put new latches on or find a new case. It will get a step up rebuild on Saxgourmet Black Roo Pads($101); seamless, large flat metal reso's($45); and some extra attention--so it will have a bit more kick than it did in the 1950s.

We'll burnish those out. a few replacement screws need returned to originals too; we'll take care of that.      It has the pearl G# in the crescent shape just like early Zephyrs. Sarge fully rebuilt this one with tan prestini pads, and seamless flat metal resonators (nickel plated) for very light action. As with all the Sarge Collection saxes, I might have to match/find the case for it. I think this one has a modern replacement (aka, not original).

LEBLANC:

a rare classic from Sarge's Collection (his description):

1960's LEBLANC System, a.k.a. Rationale Tenor Sax:

leblanc system tenor 004.jpg (391233 bytes)leblanc system tenor 006.jpg (515174 bytes)leblanc system tenor 002.jpg (433376 bytes)leblanc system tenor 003.jpg (439082 bytes)leblanc system tenor 001.jpg (270773 bytes)

This is an amazing and rare pro horn with the unique Leblanc mechanism, where the G# tone hole is at the rear and all the front pads remain open - the fingerings possible on a Leblanc are far more versatile than a conventional sax allowing for easier transitions in what are usually difficult passages - as well as multiple false fingerings and a greater range of altissimo fingerings. The Leblanc has a strong individual voice and speaks extremely well, one of the great advantages of the system is that normally stuffy notes like middle D and E speak with a clear open voice - the uniformity throughout the range is simply unachievable in any other horn. This one has at least 95% original lacquer and is in top notch condition.  I haven't had to do too much to it, except a minor tune up. It even has the original green print case in great shape! Serial #513.

That's a classic "Goldbeck and Co" mouthpiece on her, that i opened up myself and made a custom ligature for.  These have a very, very vintage sound, that's fun to play around with.

SOLD--Amazing French sax with large bell tone!

I made a SOUND FILE on the LeBlanc before it left!!!!

Chadd comments: wacky, cool, weird, unique...If a person made this THEIR sax, I think they might be unstoppable. I need to make a SOUND FILE.  VERY POWERFUL, CLEAR TONE!  Study the neck!: it has much less [hump] compared with other tenors. It was Rebuilt my me (chadd) and has sat basically unplayed since. There are a few of the locking nuts missing from age, but all the adjustment screws are present. You think the over did it? Actually during my rebuilding of it, I found 1-2 spots that would have allowed me even better precision for adjustments!

Ser#131xxx very pretty relacquer(so pretty it's TRICKY--factory relac?), engraving is still crisp and very present,...a very early Martin! body in excellent condition, just some old pads to update. Original case is suitable for shipping, but it needs replaced. It always hurts my heart to say such things.  The bottom of the bow shows some negative wear, where the lacquer has flaked off some; and that one pesky dent in the backside of the bow...yes, that will get burnished out.

Committee 2's are smaller bored in the bell, they have a [punch] to their sound. They are "Ballad Kings" and still have the Martin resonance, but can really rock with the right mouthpiece. I believe their harmonics are focused for power and can cut through the mix when you find that mouthpiece. People love the octave thumbrest, and the very sturdy build - TANKS! Although these were originally setup with no resos, our Vintage Standard Rebuild with flat metal resos really allows these to breathe and not get lost in the mix. Let's also talk about the next new case.

A baby from Sarge's Collection:

"OLDS Super" by Martin:

We have all seen a lot of speculation on these, but since i own nearly every horn Martin ever made, it's easy for me to compare and yes, this horn was made by Martin.  They used the Committee II body and much of the keywork and mechanics as well, but add the twist of flute style configuration on the actual keys.  They did use the two piece side keys and the same G# / Bb cluster.  It has one non-Martin feature that is unique, a silver tone ring (like those on brass instruments) that reads
"Super Olds made by F. E.Olds and Son, Los Angeles, California U. S. A.", neither committee I's or II's had that.

Here's a before pic:

Olds Super 001.jpg (484014 bytes)Olds Super 002.jpg (313704 bytes) I wish i could tell you how it plays, but these pads were terribly shrunken and the horn smelled too bad to even toot a C#.  I can tell you this, the workmanship is beautiful... it is Silver and Gold plated, with Satin finish on the body and shining smooth gold inside the bell and on the Bell engravings.  The serial number makes no sense, by Martins serial list, so i assume it's an Olds number... but Committee 2's were made roughly between 1938 and '45, give or take.

Interesting note, the original pads simply had a rivet in the center and were held in with one glob of shellac in the center, nothing at the edges.  Eventually i will give her some TLC, like touching up the missing silver and gold and of course a nice rebuild.

well, she's all done.  I'm very impressed with the beautiful tone of this sax.  I put in Prestini's tan lambskin pads with medium density felt and medium size flat metal resonators, it's very similar to the martin committee II, with a deep, warm and centered output.  it plays so easy throughout it's entire range.  Here are the "after" pics:

Chadd comments: I really enjoyed playing this one. From a collector's view, these are friggin' sweet! I can't remember if Sarge told me that he gold plated the crest on the front. I feel like he told me that once.

Named: "Leopard" for her beautiful vintage spots, Serial number 158,xxx, numbers match on the neck and body.   The older "The Martin" the deeper and fuller the tone and any "15xk" serial numbers are hard to see, especially in original condition.  This one is in +65% original lacquer and will be considered a great player's hornIt has had several solder repairs and some dent work, heaviest solder work a side-C tone hole. We will burnish the neck some more to its best smoothness too.  It has a non-original, vintage case that is a tri-pack--no clarinet shelf, flute set intact--in barely fair condition.  It will get a "French Standard" rebuild, with flat metal resos; considering that she's an earlier original AND I had to pay a fortune for her, we have to sell her for:

(On Consignment--will play great after my PC tune up) A WWS rebuild in 2007 by Sarge (when he was at his peak!) and it didn't get much playing time on the pads. This was a SILVER RESTORATION sax. Serial TMTsilv163k004.jpg (794278 bytes) number 163,xxx, numbers match on the neck and body. I really want to keep this one for normal Martin reasons BUT also because of the sentimental Sarge value. It has tan pads and larger plastic resos...aka a Selmer Style rebuild. It comes in a vintage, non-martin case that is not that attractive but works for storage, gig use, and shipping. The thumb rest is a replacement before the restoration, and I already pulled the dent that was in the photos. (waiting for Tune Up still, included in the price). Value all this, and the gorgeous beauty that she still is, and the price will be:

"pretty player", black roos pads

-May I introduce you to my original "Martina". It's a rare time when one of my babies will leave my ownership. This was the first, best sax, that Sarge helped me buy. It has my sentimental value all wrapped up; but I know she'll bring someone else joy.

-She's pretty, but not afraid to work--a few battle wounds, dent repairs, old neck pull-down addressed, and few limited solder fixes.

-I rebuilt her a few years ago with Black Roo pads, & seamless flat nickel resos. She was my main sax for a few years, but has only been to a few gigs in the last years. I feel bad for that. So I feel like I should help her go back to the music scene.

-the main markdown is her neck. The neck has a different serial number of the 163k....SAME YEAR of production. Body ser#:164,xxx - Neck #163K

-CASE: is not a Martin, but it is a nice vintage type. I love the storage room and the vintage-red color. It could use a little glue on the interior box. I also always put a cloth/towel around the body so there was less wobble room.

-I'll tune her up, add fresh oils, and send her off ready to sing her heart out!

Original case is excellent to match, with keys, ...and I plan to sell her with the original mouthpiece, cap and, of course, the body end cap for the storage in the case. There is a dent underneath the neck, and I think 1-2 tiny pings. 1959 "The Martin Tenor": Another great Martin here at WWS. It's a 95% Original Lacquer "The Martin Tenor" purchased from the 2nd owner. It has much of the Original Factory setup present (pads, corks and all). These are super hard to find and always in high demand. The serial numbers match on the Neck and Body #206k dates it to 1959, the original sticker is intact but my inspection is valid on the lacquer! It had a few dings, a minor dents on arrival. I removed 4-5 prior to taking photos and I'll get the rest when the sax is taken apart.  The G# helper-spring looks to be removed; that will get added back on. And the only other cosmetic sections to note are the palm D body solder corrosion and the wear around the serial number. Otherwise, the sax is in excellent shape.  Martin's have a great tone that is quickly becoming very well respected in the market--clean tone, resonant low end!, even tone throughout, and better than average ergos for the vintage sax world. Original case is great shape to match--It's the square orange one from the RMC take over era. I believe this is a transitional sax (into the Magna "RMC" era) as you can see the neck-bumper for the octave key and the late-era lacquer color. It will get our Vintage Standard Rebuild with flat metal resonators and natural cork throughout.

1960 The Martin Magna Tenor:  It's serial # is 210,79x,  made in 1960.  This one is an older relac, in nice shape overall.  I need to remove a little messy solder on the low C guard and tonehole, but the pics are "before" style, big pics, so you can see anything up close, as it is now.  The Magna's extra features are an adjustable octave mechanism screw to control the height of the octave key, an extra big and comfy LH thumb pearl, adjustable bow and bell key felts and extra rollers on the G# table.   This one is RMC, so it does have the "Roundtable" crest on it.  With the right pad and reso setup in them, these can be the worlds best Bebop' tenors.  The sound of the Magna is not much different than any other Committees, but they do have the advantage of a silver cross to ward off attack by Vampires!  Great, rare Pro horns, big ol' fat sound, unlike any other...   Just completely rebuilt, (our Vintage rebuild: dissemble it, clean it inside and out, add new natural cork and prestini pads/flat reso's, lube and reassembled it, then check for leaks, she is ready to blow).   Comes in nice square protec case.

1963 The Martin Tenor, "The Official Music Man": another fantastic Martin sax with 80% original lacquer intact. A beauty! Built as a dedication to the movie release, these "Music Man"s were built for one year only. This one looks very nice and will deserve your upgraded rebuild requests. This model is highly regarded even though it was at the end of the classic Martin era; yes it bares the RMC crest (late Serial #214,xxx) on the bell too! There is some evidence of well done solder repairs: neck receiver, thumbrest. Bell lip shows past repair (no lacquer), but it looks sharp too. They are excellent players. Sarge even sold his early original 1947 TMT for the Music Man he upgraded to several years back. Needless to say, his was gorgeous as always and sounded excellent. These are near identical in sound to any of the The Martin Tenors or Magnas but the later era is bound to not be as dark. Either way, traditional BIG Martin sound all over this one. This sax is scheduled for a Vintage Standard Rebuild but upgrade to Saxgourmet Roo Pads and seamless flat metal resos. I'd love to do Premium upgrades too! Comes in nice square Martin case.

1963 The Martin Tenor, "The Official Music Man Model":

This is my The Martin "Committee" Tenor, one of the finest most powerful sounding tenors ever made.

Sarge was lucky enough to get this one with the original rivet pads still in it, in completely unaltered condition.  It' serial # is 218,xxx, one of the very first made in 1963.   I gave up my 158k all original tenor for this one, so i guess that answers all the questions as to whether the newer ones play/sound as nice as the forties models.  This one does have the RMC Roundtable crest on it.  Such top notch craftsmanship and quality parts went into this '63 model, that if you look closely at the pearls, you can see clouds, the sky and rainbows in them. With an aggressive pad and reso setup in them, these can be the worlds best Rockin' tenors.

You can listen to me (sarge) playing this Martin Tenor, from (my band) the Phantoms Blues Band's latest C.D, by clicking here

Chadd comments: This horn was immaculate! what a beauty. It played amazing too! This was the essence of craftsmanship. I really wish I had enough money to just keep this one.

1930
Gold Plate Selmer Super New Largebore Tenor Sax: Named: "Goldie" for her exquisite shine. Here is another beautiful sax I am the second owner (outside of the family). It is 99% original Gold Plate and in excellent condition. Serial #13k dates it to about 1930. Whatever the closest step is to 'MINT', this sax is it. The only silver I see showing through is on the octave thumb button. This is a special sax with a backstory: bought new and gigged with in the Ozzie Nelson Band of Rutger's University while the player used gig money to pay his way through school (too bad we can't do that anymore!).

This is very unique era for Selmer because the "SSS" for the Super lineage was not on most of the early saxes, and actually mostly only on altos vs the tenors. See: Saxpics.com for more reading pleasure. Goodson's reviews will put these as the first saxes to start sounding like the Selmers we think of today. Check the Sound File. You will hear the spread power of the early Selmer. The popular VI Sound is very warm, subtle and smoother.

It arrived with the original wood case in rough shape. I recommend keeping it with the sax but using another main one. On arrival the pads are tan with large, light-domed, metal resos (like 1940s-50s selmer) that may be original! I will fully rebuild this sax with my French Standard Rebuild but substitute in metal resos like it originally had; shine it up by hand, and sell it for the next loving home. Let's talk about cool resonators! Gold Resotechs??? It will go for:

Here's another great tenor. SBA's are getting rarer and rarer. Original finish examples now demand $12,000-14,000+. this one is in nice condition, relacquered finish/has had work done at 90%, #43xxx. The finish is interesting. It is very crisp and did not over-buff the beautiful engravings (even the neck emblem); however I can see lacquer runs, acid bleeds (see G# posts), and the thumb rest has wear on the body tube but also a Sticker there to protect it. Overall, this horn is in very very good shape--no major damage to mention. Included in the price is a WWS Vintage Standard Rebuild with tan prestini pads and natural cork. Early Selmers had metal resos with a slight dome. So to replace those would be chronologically correct. This will be a smooth action tenor and a sultry jazz horn.

There is no need to talk much about this sax's quality. It plays with a smoky tone as expected, with the warmth and clarity of an SBA.  The finished is 85% relacquer.

Superb Serial #53,xxx with Mark VI bell keyguard!!! (I love this! because I hate the earlier design; from my Tech review.)  It also comes with vintage Selmer "Clear Tone" wood Clarinet! ($$$) The clarinet does play all the way down also, however I would recommend some major repadding on it too.

CASE: the vintage Selmer tri-pack case (flute and clarinet zones intact). The case is in pretty nice shape (one zipper pull lever is gone).

Serial # 83,6xx made in 1959, i guess i don't need to add to the Legend about the 5 digit MK VI's, suffice it to say they are considered the best in the world and often command prices in excess of 8000.00.  These "Brecker Era" models are highly sought after for just that.  Made in France,  the body and neck are in very good shape and looked beautiful after Sherry Huntley re-engraved the original engravings,  and Anderson Silver Plating applied bright shiny Silver.  The neck has no serial number and a lot of early mk vi's had none, but i'm convinced by size , shape and match to saxes finish when i got it, that it is original.  I put in all new Stainless Steel springs and did a faithful French Standard repad, with extra ultrasuede and teflon and i even had a complete set of original MK VI plastic domed screw-back resonators, i  used.   The finished project is one of the finest playing and sharpest looking mk vi's i have had the pleasure to work on.

(Special Offsite Consignment--Plays excellent) Here is a superb sax. It is a Gold Restoration with silver underneath. It is a ser#86,xxx and that alone comes with its own resume. Gary, the owner featured on the Sound File, picked this up in Paris while traveling as professional musician. Gary's expertise on the matter can be supported by his lifetime of playing professionally (1000+ shows with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Rod Stuart...etc). Gary's blessing in life: this was his Backup Horn. !haha! Our blessing: it hasn't been out of the case much since. The sax plays excellent. It was rebuilt/restored by Jay Sleigh of the San Diego, CA area about 10yrs ago and not played much since. There is some minor pitting under the gold that I tried to capture in the worse possible view in some photos (back tube, thumb rest). There is no major damage to mention. Did you know that gold plating (just the dipping!) costs about $4,000 at cost today?! factor that in your value.

Serial #135,xxx made in 1966, Made in France,  the body is in excellent shape with 70% original lacquer. The bad: The neck is actually from another selmer, HOWEVER from the same year: #134k. I also have a Gold plated Ponzol I have in stock--they are "just different" on selmers if you're looking for sound options, since this one is a great "player". This sax currently has nice pads but will need a bath. I don't think I can save them to and get the smell out. Comes in a replacement case, a nice rectangle wood one.  It will get a "French Standard" Rebuild with Prestini Pads and plastic domed resos to replicate the original setup, and natural cork throughout.

1951-52 Perma-Gold Plate SML, Revision D Tenor:

SMLrevD9k_001.jpg (494895 bytes)Here's super sought after sax, in a super rare finish, with an excellent early-range serial number!

These are superb tenors, made in France and rare as well. This one is in original perma-gold plate that I will call 85%. The Rev D is very well respected and known for a uniquely special tone.  This sax has a nice engraving and I love the shiny vs matte look SML created in this original setup. Serial # 9xxx = 1951-52, Gold Finish was SMLs top option and super rare, thus the price. SML saxophones have a big Conn 10m like sound, but the advantage of french mechanical design, so they are more ergonomic. The SMLs really do have a sound all their own--French focus crossed with American Beef--Superb!  Did I mention that my personal alto is a Rev D?! THE BAD: The flaws on this particular sax inlude the loss of the two adjustment screws on the F# arm (bis and G# adjustments)--I will find better screws to substitute, and the neck strap ring has been moved twice. The rear of the sax will show the solder marks, sadly. But aside from those main two things, this sax is still a very pretty eye-catcher, with a tone to blow the doors down...and it doesn't even have the huge resos I want to put on it yet!!!

Here is a true SML build with the stenciled name branding. This specific detail will save you about $2000, but your sound will be identical to your SML craving ears. Serial #19xxx dates it to about the 1966-67 and the Gold Medal 1 era. Translation: Huge, fat, SML tone during some of their best years. Original Lacquer finish at 97%. Negatives: a few dings and pings that I'll burnish out; two on the neck, about 3 on the back bow, and the pants guard will bend back to 'straight'. I have no doubts that these will clean up nicely and only show a bit of past work. The neck tenon was resoldered. I can help clean it up, but it was done pretty well.

CASE: original hard case in good working order, has seen owner-mods with screws.

Don't forget all the SML features like "Articulated G# on/off lever" too.

This one has yet to be rebuilt but it completely deserves "The Sarge Special Rebuild"--Premium with larger resos (Resotech! $250). Once it's set up, I guarantee you will turn heads and slay a few Selmers (PS-I love SMLs and am very tempted to keep this sax in my personal stash).

TBD - save me from keeping it!

SAX or REBUILD

We love connecting to our customers. Here's the new guide to get the ball rolling.

Vito (Beaugnier):

1972 vintage Vito (by Beaugnier) Tenor Sax:

VitoBeaugnierTenor22k_001.jpg (702031 bytes)VitoBeaugnierTenor22k_002.jpg (491249 bytes)VitoBeaugnierTenor22k_003.jpg (671396 bytes)VitoBeaugnierTenor22k_004.jpg (559077 bytes)VitoBeaugnierTenor22k_005.jpg (550407 bytes)VitoBeaugnierTenor22k_006.jpg (424158 bytes)

Here's a neat sax! These vintage Vito's are often "diamonds in the rough" made to compete with the other Pro makers: Buffet, Selmer, SML... This one qualifies as an Intermediate-Pro Model. Serial # 22,4xx made around 1972, (the serial dating for this ear is a bit scarce). There are a few folks who have a cult following for the earlier models (Duke, Duke Special -- 50s, 60s). Although this later model was a little differently designed (non-selmer-like G# table of Duke model), it still have gold plated springs, and a cool-unique G# ON/OFF Articulator! "Made in France" stamped on the sax holds true to the Stencil lineage for how Yamaha and Yanagisawa were just reaching out to Beaugnier for their saxes.  This later model features inline stacks (not offset like selmer) and Right Hand Bell Keys, with the previous elaborate engraving. Original Lacquer finish is at 90% with some scratches and dings. About 1-4 dents I'll address, the hardest one being the lower bow guard getting a little flat. A few negatives I'll have to address are the Octave Thumb Rest (plastic plate gone missing) and the lack of Pants Guard on the back (not a required fix--might look better without?), and super light neck pull-down to investigate (not really worth mentioning). It is here with the original pad setup (large large flat metal resos). SOUND: It has a center focus. I wouldn't call it "French" but it's like a cross with French focus and early Martin power. The bell is narrow, not spread like SML, and I disagree with folks on the net claiming this is like an SML. The cult followers credit the inline stacks for great evenness in the tone throughout the entire range. Comes with original wood case in good shape (but it took a bump in shipping and I might put 2 'L' brackets on the top-front edge).  I will fully rebuild this sax with my French Standard Rebuild but substitute in LARGE metal resos like it originally had; Let's talk about Noyak Stars--to support its natural power bore! It will sell, rebuilt, for:

(Special Consignment -- Plays Great) Another superb tenor, ser#017xxx, Original Lacquer at 85%. They are clean sounding, comfortable playing tenors, with great intonation.  In the Yamaha pro lines, people seek out these Purple Logo ones (pickiness says: they play better). It received mostly newer pads elsewhere; it feels wrong to tear them out. this sax impressed me on arrival. (I'm not a big fan of "the Yamaha tone".) This sax has a bit more depth and body than what most people know of for Yamaha--I give credit to the "purple logo"; this must be the reason that these are in demand.

I have priced it low for only one reason: a past owner had a small custom area. (see Photo: Side Bb, C, E) The brass was trimmed in the spacing. Otherwise, I would have priced this sax easily at $2700.00+. CASE: comes with original hard case in good shape.
