If you wish to schedule a rebuild, or purchase one of the saxes (and it still needs to be rebuilt),  send me a 50% deposit to hold your place in the work schedule.  I work from a published schedule (see left margin) so that your sax will only be out of your possession a couple weeks, while i do the actual work, it does not have to just sit on the shop floor, until its turn comes up... you send it to arrive on schedule and we return it on schedule.

  If  a horns says "just rebuilt", then it's ready to go, saxes that say "scheduled for a rebuild" are waiting for the work to be done, but it will be included in the posted price.  If a sax says "ON TRIAL" someone is taking advantage of the "Three Day Trial" policy (See Info and Orders page).

Keilwerth made The New King and Tone King  as their main brand names, from 1932 to 1969 or so, but there were always stencils, like Edgeware and later Couf.  Here are few of the other names you may find on Keilwerth made horns.  The New King and Tone King saxes were identical except for a high F# key on the tone king model, but keilwerth marketed the Tone King as the "deluxe" Pro model and the New King as the "standard" Pro model

BRILHART: 

This is a very nice, free blowing mpc -- tooth pad repaired in the past, and has two newer tooth marks on the top that I could easily cover up with a clear pad (remind me). It blows a big sound with heavy mid tones for a metal, cliff baffle. later vintage series with up and down machining on the table. This is the more desirable 5*...hard to find, original tip measures 0.081". It blows really nice and free. comes with original cap and ligature! (please ask me to get these top-view pics uploaded)

1968-69 no serial #. I happen to know a little history from this mouthpiece's journey to be able to date it. Although no serial #, I happen to know what horn the fellow was playing. If I link these two eras, they both line up with about 1968-9. I will have Bob C fill in the tooth pad, and inspect the tip. The tip arrived in nice condition but the table has some bumps from in the case. We'll make this play great!

SOUND: blows easy! Plays a little brighter/cutting than I expected from a Tonalin.

Brilhart Tonalin 3 alto: #180276 with script in great condition. This one plays really nice with decent focus as you would expect from a Tonalin.  Not too loud (small tip) and it helps cut out the high-tones. A good smooth Stan Getz, Louis Jordan type sound--high treble tones get cut out. Tip size at 0.066", tooth pad sticker installed. Comes with ligature. I just noticed a hairline crack at the shank; I am deciding whether to send it to Bob for banding ...perhaps with a customer order, we would be willing to Reface this one to a larger tip. (5*?)

Vintage Buescher (Rascher) Alto: (pictured on the right) Vintage hard rubber from 1920s.  No script, has faded into that vintage hard rubber. I took side-by-side photos to show the longer length of this one--Neat!  It had the original tip size @ about 0.045"...now, I refaced it to 0.058" for a customer.  It plays really nice with a Lavoz Medium, and great with a 2.5 reed, due to smaller tip, I see it being best with a #3 or higher.  It has a very large Chamber and that traditional 1920s stuffy tone.  no ligature, but i might be able to find one.   $$$ See new website Item#:WWS0.00.9181.2-0C34

 

Vintage Buescher pickle "TrueTone USA" Tru-Lay 65/812/M Alto: Vintage hard rubber from 1920s.  It has the original tip size @ about 0.054". It will play nicer with a Lavoz Medium, and poorly with a 2.5 reed so stick to #3 or greater.  It has a very large Chamber and that traditional 1920s stuffy tone, narrow beak.  no ligature, but ask me. Very Vintage Buescher pickle [Emblem Font] Alto: Vintage hard rubber from 1920s(perhaps earlier).  It has been refaced (elsewhere?) to tip size @ about 0.064". I THINK THIS COULD BE A SWEET SWEET PLAYER!  It has a very large Chamber and that traditional 1920s stuffy tone but add in the high tones from the reface.  no ligature, but ask me. Buescher pickle "aristocrat", hard rubber alto: tip @ 0.082" and it plays way better and with more treble than the original facings. comes with brass ligature. When I fixed the facing work, I tried to get rid of all baffle and enhance the true Buescher tone and round chamber. It plays really nice now!

Conn "Eagle" Alto (RAC): Recently back from a refacing by Bob Carpenter to a 0.081" with a 19mm facing. Bob marked his etching on the table too ("RAC")! A great hard rubber mouthpiece that will give you a warm full sound--It would have been originally paired with a Conn Chu. A large chamber on this one. Bob and I helped enhance the gold 'eagle' script.      NOTE: the original facing was "0.078" as it was inscribed. But a nick happened in the tip and BOB had to repair it. Vintage Dukoff D5 {D6} Miami, FL Alto: Metal, rock & roll Loud mouthpieces.  David Sanborn power, it blows really easy and carries that bright sound naturally. We sent this to Bob Carpenter for reclamation as it needed Bob to be saved.  It was beat up as is typical for Dukoff silverite material. Tips and rails look great now, whole mouthpiece lightly polished, and Bob Carpenter refaced it to be a now D6, TIP = 0.077", baffle is that large step/slope baffle. bite plate looks good too (usually worn through. It plays really nice with a Fat Dukoff sound, not as shrill as D7, new tooth guard installed. comes with rovner ligature and plastic cap.   (considering that D7 and D8 are going for 450-650, this shouldn't last too long.) ***I just saw an ugly one go on ebay for more than this!

The composite is interesting, something between silver and brass. Tip opened to a size of 0.065". No ligature, notice the lack of tooth pad design, we'll include a cushion if you'd like to play. white composite "RAC" Alto:  This is a composite plastic mouthpiece--white with black bite plate cushion installed.  This received metal banding repair and refacing from Bob Carpenter and now has a tip size of 0.082" with a 17mm facing. It has a medium chamber with shallow side walls like a Martin, ebolin, or tonalin. sound-wise: it has a mild tubby-ness to it, smooth like classic jazz...Until you go up high. then the 82 tip opens up to a bit brighter, cutting ability. NoName (vandoren look) alto:  made of a unique hard rubber, it has a shallow beak and high chamber build, low baffle and slight rollover at the tip from my reface. It is now refaced to 0.077". The chamber is almost a standard "medium" except it has some rounded sidewalls that don't protrude too far.

MISC [No Name] 5, hard rubber alto:

nice hard rubber design that looks familiar...(ask me if I have Identified it yet). I had to finesse the factory table and facing, this one will play great. I just enhanced it to ~ 0.069". It plays _____[let me check after reface-fine-tuning]___. It has a medium (like a Meyer), round chamber with TIGHTER- rounded side walls. Upon a quick play test, it is more Reserved in tone, mild resistance in blowing. I would certainly look at the tip for any finesse repairs to the curve. I think this could be a GREAT player for a budget-minded person. no lig sorry.

Vintage Riffault, R4 Alto: a great mouthpiece, Steelite Ebonite name = good, made in "France". It has a medium-small chamber and reminds me of a Selmer C* for response and focus, and I just opened it up to 0.068". It plays nice now with good response. no ligature. Robert A Carpenter alto:  Here is a White composite plastic mouthpiece and it's very nice.  We got it with its original tip and Bob Carpenter opened it up to a .082"  with a 19mm facing... and it is easy to blow, makes a big vintage tone, with just a little edge. Vintage, YORK alto:

Vintage hard rubber from 1920s/30s. It has a VERY LARGE Chamber, no baffle (yet) and Original Tip @ 0.051" -- Let's reface that! It will play easy.  I would say it sounds typical of a stuffy, vintage tone but after Mine or Bob's work, it can cut through in the high register--still not as loud of a mpc as others.  no ligature currently, ask me.

Ponzol "Vintage" C*, hard rubber alto:

nice hard rubber design. Designed to blend the best of the Vintage & Modern tones, folks say this has [an old Otto Link or Meyer tone, without that hefty price tag.]  ...although I had to finesse the factory table and facing, this one will play great. I just enhanced it to ~ 0.067". It plays clean with brighter abilities to push!. It has a medium(like a Meyer)-round chamber with rounded side walls. I expect a great blowing piece, excellent center core tone, with projection. no lig sorry. 

PLAY TEST: slightly brighter abilities to cut through than expected. Still Meyer-esque, but with a bit more punch.

A.Lelandais Chantecler IV, CUSTOM hard rubber alto: from the {GRAB BAG Row 1, #2}, Hard Rubber, in non-original facing, I had to drastically help this mouthpiece be able to play by leveling the table and refacing it myself.  I knew it would be worth saving. I refaced to 0.081”,(photos are Before reface)  Large round chamber-with custom bullet baffle! plays great! bold and focused. I want to help find a ligature for this one. It's a unique size. So I had to modify a soprano wrap with some cor125 k inserts. Otto Link "Master Link" model, 3<5* alto:

vintage early 1930s metal mouthpiece WITH SLIDE-ON LIGATURE. These have a huge chamber, low baffle and a very reserved, warm tone. This is the model right before the "4****" model. They are not loud players...at least in original setup. This one has a refaced tip @ 0.070"! (I can't verify, but I think I know which Pro Refacer did the work). These are some of the warmest mouthpieces I have played. definitely need a mic to be heard in a group. Not every metal mouthpiece = loud. SUPER RARE ligature!

Otto Link "Tone Master", 3<6* alto:

vintage 1930/40s metal mouthpiece. It has the [9*] on the shank, a second series Tone Master with 3-digit ser#E88, These have a huge chamber, low baffle and a THAT classic Link tone. This is the model right after the "4****" model. They are credited for being bigger players than the previous era...at least in original setup. A few big players on this model: (TENOR) Ben Webster, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and (ALTO) Benny Carter.  This one arrived with a reface to 0.080"! (maximum tip size for this piece) (I can't verify, but I think I know which Pro Refacer did the work).  And it plays really nice a smoky!, a quieter option for volume but very sweet in tone. currently no ligature, sorry. It is 100% worn so that brass is all you see.

vintage Otto Link "Super Tone Master" 5* ALTO: Another great mouthpiece from the late 70s!I believe this is the Transitional model--Large Font on the "5*", with USA.  It arrived with Original tip measures 0.068"...There were some metal bubbles forming on the table. So I opted to "enhance-reface" it and inspect the tip--I improved the tip seal too($+80). You can still see the Denim! THEN, new 24k GOLD plated the whole mouthpiece ($+70). You can see the original marks on the table and tip! ASK ME ABOUT A LIGATURE, it arrived with the one the owner bought with it, but it fits a tenor (?). [Wagner/J.K. BLANK] alto:  here's another winner!--a cheap option: hard rubber. No script. medium-large chamber...poised for a nice, crisp, jazz tone. Originally 0.061" on arrival, It will get reface and play crisp and clear! Likely to about 0.063-068"...or check in to see if you can request the size! Comes with one screw ligature!

Current play test: medium resistance. I'm not sure if I like that, and would certainly look into the tip for finesse work. This should be a very clear, clean tone, with free-blowing traits.
