If  a horns says "just rebuilt", then it's ready to go, saxes that say "scheduled for a rebuild" are waiting for the work to be done, but it will be included in the posted price.  If a sax says "ON TRIAL" someone is taking advantage of the "Three Day Trial" policy (See Info and Orders page).

BERG LARSEN:

Berg Numbers: [TIP] - [Baffle] (0 brightest, to 3 darkest) - [Facing Length] (SMS short, M longer)

***Bergs usually run -0.005 under the factory stamp marking.***

BergLarsenTenor130-0-sms_001.jpg (332381 bytes)BergLarsenTenor130-0-sms_002.jpg (294338 bytes) Berg Larsen 130-0-SMS Vintage 1970s/80s Tenor: WHEW! Tips of 130 are always cool and rare! This "Straight Bill" is a stainless steel, metal mouthpiece with a bullet chamber. a butt-kicking assisted-original 0.130" tip size...Berg's usually run -5 from their numbers. So! I think the original owner actually did some minor modifications. The tip seals well. (He was professional metal worker and craftsman, so I'm sure he was capable.) It still has side-to-side table marks, and has the longer shank (later era)...It's a 70s/80s vintage. Worth noting: I would need to research more this, but it may be more of an "M" and a "SMS" facing length--however, the 0.130" might be a special thing.  REAL FAT tone, and air needed! it's the straight + bullet chamber model. Comes with nickel nail-file lig and a nickel cap (non berg). Compare this with new bergs at +$275...and this is a vintage one!

I just enhanced the tip to 0.119" because it arrived at an incorrect .112"(it may be a factory trait, because my other '120' Scoopbill arrived with a 112 tip). Plays great.

vertical denim machine marks, with the brass lig and cap (1 missing screw at this time), and long shank dates it to the late 1940s, stainless steel. Huge tone and big tip. The tip is near Original tip = 0.087". There is evidence of the tip taking a knock on the edges that is worth mentioning, and you can verify in the photos that the seal is safe.

a superb mouthpiece. It reminds me of my frequent flyer. good material, and a near original tip, had slight enhancements done here at WWS, is at 0.095" , table markings were worked off prior to WWS (but trust the Offset M for the era). Bullet chamber is there, does show very mild evidence of work done(nothing to fear). We also inspected the minor wear to the rail to ensure the seal is still free-and-clear. I've marked the price down $50 for these. I found a vintage Berg ligature to pair with it too!

SOUND: It's big, robust, yet clear, the #3 baffle helps leave some warmth in this robust core tone.

NEAR Original facing tip at 0.087". ***tip will need me to Enhance the seal, and slightly level the Table for optimum seal (INCLUDED IN PURCHASE)*** This one will play very strong with the characteristic Brilhart sound--medium chamber with flat side walls. Likely a bit more presence in the treble tones but darn close to my Tonalin 5 (0.085") from my sound files. Sorry, no ligature.

This 1980 mpc is a nice free blowing mpc with an WWS enhanced tip measuring 0.104" . It blows a big sound with heavy mid tones for a metal, cliff-style baffle. Minor refacing-curve work done here at WWS that surely improved this piece (table had to be flattened to the reed seal, and the curve restarted/reset, also the tip edge fine-tuned.

Bob Carpenter refaced the tip to a 0.100" with a 23mm facing--"RAC". It plays very easy and has a centered, Mid-Tone core to the tone. These have a medium chamber with shallow side walls. Originally, it came with a super cool, "Brilhart" plastic cap and I found a Brilhart 3-band ligature to pair up with it!, however, a customer requested to purchase those separately. I have reduced the price to reflect the Mouthpiece solo. I can find a ligature for you though. Just ask.

Another great, historical gem! black hard rubber,  TIP MEASURES 0.118" -- WOW. There is very little known about these early pieces. I will say this: This piece played great!  I loved playing it. My estimate is that it was an early 1980s design/manufacture (although it could be an older 'design' as rumors have it as a Blank later used by Beechler. The 118 tip was very easy to blow! I will attempt to put together some rumors (forum talkers) and hearsay that may shed some light on it:

     Description:

      The short:

Superb mouthpiece! Hard Rubber. Arnold Brilhart "Hard Rubber" / "Great Neck Original" 9*
--sweet sounds, easy blower,
--factory flaws in the shank (covered by neck cork), does not affect playing.
--horizontal machine marks on the table.
--Chamber: is medium, with lightly rounded side-walls. Less round the the official Brilhart "Hard Rubber" model.

      The Long:

Here was my reply to an inquiry about my originally limited info:
The Beechler company did [make] the ARB line; this was in cooperation [with] Brilhart.
I shall certainly add more to the brief description as this rare mouthpiece deserves a proper introduction and representation.

Most people don't know about the early "Hard Rubber"/"Great Neck Original". They are wildly respected and great playing mouthpieces.
Even Beechler's website doesn't have photos of this vintage one (20-30yrs old) as they focus on their newest creations (white with side-walls in the chamber); nor does the tip measurement match up with their website markings for a [#9 ARB at 0.110"]. Even the #10 is only a 0.115. I just think this mouthpiece is a slayer and the added 0.118 tip carried the need for a serious player too, right?
SOTW fellow: "The Great Neck Original blanks were the original blanks used by Brilhart, and were later found and sold by Beechler."
SOTW fellow: "So there is no confusion-- the ARB GREAT NECK ones were blanks that were faced by ARB with their standard facings and numbers, so they bear no correlation to the facings of the original Brilhart GREAT NECK models, the only thing in common is the blank."

The alto counterparts are also fantastic players and sell very well. I still recall the last one I had in here.
If you have any extra and unique info on this rare piece, I'm all ears on it.

Regardless of all the unknown info, at the end of the day, all that matters is that it 1) plays well, and 2) it is always great to have some historical link to the great mouthpiece makers of the sax world.  It was a pleasure to have it pass through my hands here at WWS.

Here is another highly sought after Brilhart!, original facing #3 on the table.4-digit ser# with, what I believe is the first number scratched off.  Expect Bob Carpenter to give this one a special Refacing to optimize your joy! --YES: Bob refaced it! It is a 0.097" with a Long 23mm facing. (Note this fact). The 23mm facing is not my personal preference, but it might your embouchure style--worth noting--Mouthpiece plays really great.

Sound type:  It has very even, BOLD, clean tone. It is not "smooth", per se. It has a crisp bark with a smooth rubber general tone. (the "hard rubber" #6 listed below is more Smooth.) The tooth pad lived with a biter, HA, so Bob cleaned it up with extra attention and smoothed it out. Depending on your preference for cosmetics or comfort, perhaps a tooth pad will cover this area. Sorry, no ligature...yet? Bob LOVED this piece. I think he wants to buy it from me. (how's that for an endorsement?):

(I hope my cleaners can also act as as sealer to the rubber--to help the playing experience away from the taste of vintage rubber).  It arrived with original tip at 0.084" but it will get a WWS Reface here. The air goes into straight side-walls, into a Medium round chamber (slightly smaller than my other Couf Artist), currently with no baffle (small rollover likely in reface). This has a semi-slimline look. I have had several of these that were really fun!  This one has a slightly smaller medium chamber than Sarge's collection one (The "Artist"). Dukoff D6 [Nickel plated/silverite?!] ALTO/C-Melody

~IN BETWEEN ALTO AND TENOR~

Dukoff-lineup-with-C_D6_nickelplated_silverite_001.JPG (1391262 bytes)     Here is a surprise mouthpiece! (I can learn something new every day!) great This mouthpiece with a tip at 0.074" and a bum reed facing. It will needed refacing help. So I had Bob Carpenter look into it. He filled the tooth pad. After he returned it (also with confusion!), I did some serious improvements to the facing -- a WWS Reface-- and it now currently sits at 0.071".  This is a very tricky mouthpiece. Here is my best guess: A prototype Alto, or a C-melody test!

Why might I guess it is a C-Melody?

Measurements:

1) body length that does not match Alto or Tenor.

2) Shank that does not go onto a tenor.

3) Reed window matches vintage C-melody mouthpieces

4) Reed plate is long for an alto, and short for a tenor (the reed hangs over the edge)

SOUND: Focused warmth and slight edge--from flat sidewalls into round chamber(throat). "Rico Products LTD Distributors" + "Model A". These have a shallow beak that allows the mouthpiece to vibrate freely like Gregorys are known for. TIP arrived measuring very much original 0.078". However, when I look at it, I feel like there was very very minor work done to the tip to help it seal (perhaps). I'll inspect this and make sure it plays awesome. The mouthpiece just received a WWS Reface, Tip at: 0.085". It plays with large gusto for only an 0.085", with an easy response.

Here is a well-loved example of another great, Gregory mouthpiece. Typical MC Gregory design: shallow beak and quality rubber. This is the [type 3] of the GALE Hollywood--with the thinnest metal shank.  Made probably in the late 1940s, by my guess.

The GALE was named after his daughter and the craftsmanship was still present to this day upon my early inspection. Unfortunately the tip had some damage on arrival so a reface seemed to be required to bring it to life. Rather than keep it at the original 0.062" it arrived with, the repairs allowed me to open it up to a very smooth playing 0.080" tip!

SOUND: It has a very clean tone and is even across the full instrument (perhaps a bit of extra resonance in the low end).

Currently no ligature is paired with it, but I'd be happy to include a basic one if you ask.

$SOLD Once you try it, I doubt you will want to let it go!

a mid-70s large font (side number) "Super Tone Master", length measures 100mm and the 18mm SKINNY tooth pad. These are a bit rarer and less known. After cleaning it up, the play test was nice--subtle smooth "Link tone", but the response wasn't quite [butter] on my first reed. Tip and table showed some very slight refacing adjustments. However, according to my inspection, I will have to give this one a Full Reface. This Link deserves it. I am aiming for a butter-responsive tip and a warm Otto Link Tone. Comes with ligature and cap! (Box is here too, but it was on a new level of gross smell). It just received a reface & replating my me. I tried to keep it as close to original as possible. The untrained eye won't even know it was worked on. The curve wasn't even a "curve" on arrival. UPDATE: Tip measures 0.094" (#6+)after reface 22.5 facing length.

...1950s "NO USA" Otto Link--short body, no serial #, small font with roll-over baffle (=brighter tone). Has a slight roll-over baffle as was the design (more brighter) and perhaps more of a baffle in this one because of tip change from the 4* (small font) marking up to the ~#6 size. refaced tip @ 0.093"....or a 6+ (6 = ~0.091). I can almost certainly tell you that this tip was done by Bob Carpenter (I know the story on this mouthpiece and the buyer traded it in many years later). The bite pad shows signs of being repaired (glue) to hold, and it appears there was a pickup filled. (I don't see any worries there--I just feel the need to mention).  I did a few inspection points on the tip (since it was out with player for so long), I opted to do very minor touchups to clean up the table & tip seal. As was done previous, I'll seal those repairs with fresh gold plating! Comes with original ligature and non-original nickel cap (if you'd like it). It plays with a [brighter] tone than the classic Link tone.

yes, I said the super rare "7" tip!!! (keep in mind that is based on the vintage chart size: = a modern 5* Link size) It arrived in an Original Tip @ 0.085"!!! BUT...it did not play well at all--facing was too long, So after leveling the table, and adjusting the curve start & end, I improved it and had to do a minor reface to 0.086".PLAYS AWESOME! It has a white tooth pad (confusing to me) but it looks original--NEAT!.      I get a lot of questions about my old friend Bob Carpenter...

Bob got a lot of mouthpiece refacers started, such as Theo Wanne, who in turn, got others started later...

but no one does nicer work than Bob.  Check out "Bob's Page" to know more: READ ON...

A professionally custom refaced mouthpiece will almost

always play better than a factory facing.
