SOLD - Repaired tip to 0.107". Tip seal was saved by Bob C to a more desired [0.107"]. With modern Berg ligature (fits a little loose).
There's more room for me to inspect and discuss this mouthpiece with you. Please inquire.
Keilwerth 1992 ‘Buffet Expression’ Bb Tenor, #98k (Archived)
SOLD - A pro sax that is the precursor to the Julius Keilwerth SX90. Don't let the "Buffet" label fool you; this is a Keilwerth sax. complete with the C/Eb design, high F# layout, and don't forget the adjustable palm key heights too! Serial # 98,xxx, it was built in about 1992. The dating is less exact on this era, but all info points to 1991-93. In the history of companies, Buffet and Keilwerth came under one ownership. Rumors from a friend/player in Iceland: These being made in the Buffet factory for Keilwerth. This seems correct as the pearl design is not that of Keilwerth (large version), but more like Buffet. SOUND: These are supremely warm and meaty, although not as meaty as my Couf or older JKs. I must insert the rumor here: factory talk of blending the JK with Buffet to build a [JK classical tone]. It this is true, I concur with this attempt because the sound is a bit more focused and reserved than my other Keilwerths in the shop (and my personal horn). REBUILD: I'd like to sell this with a full rebuild, and set it up to your specifications because it is playing on the original pad setup and it beginning to show age beyond what will be enjoyable. Let's discuss what you'd like; otherwise, I can put the JK Standard setup on it: seamless-domed, nickel resonators, on tan pads. CASE: original case in good condition.
Conn 1941 ’10M’ Bb Tenor, #295,xxx (Archived)
SOLD - Looking for a loud Conn 10M under $2000? Since I see a faint engraving, I must say "re-lacquer"; the previous owner was sold this sax as Original, but I doubt that it is. The wear on the bell could be from use, or old buffing. Wear and tear report: A few dents in the rear bow, rolled tone holes that do look like some were flattened, none appear to be filed through the 'roll', no missing set-screws(one was cut into the post to remove--upper octave button post), one replaced pivot screw(C#1), upper bell lip has slight bent (I can help). Overall, it's a complete 10M with a huge, loud sound.
SOUND: This one is particularly "crisp" in tone. I suspect this tone is due to the mostly bare-brass finish.
PADS: the setup is tan pads on smaller flat resos with rivet (similar to Conn originals). Some pads with rivet only. I would guess, depending on use, they are 10-25 years old. They will play as is, with mild tuneups along the way, for another 1-7 years(depending on use).
CASE: a very nice Hiscox case! ($280+).
I would recommend this sax get a full rebuild to be enjoyed fully, however, since it can play great for a while with some tuneups, I will sell it with two prices.
Selmer 1969 ‘Mark VI’ Bb Tenor, #172,xxx (Archived)
No Longer for sale - (On Consignment - Plays OK) A nice original lacquer Mark VI. Ser #172k. It is currently setup with older tan pads and larger noyak resos. Overall the sax is in excellent condition. There is dent in the front bow guard. With one modification to note: there was a very professional repair work done to the F-F# add on as a helper arm. (This is a great thing from a technician/player's perspective. This key always needs help to close.) Should you want it removed, it can be taken off easily with a very small repair scar. CASE: Red Reunion Blues bag in very good condition. Item#:WWSConsignmentWyard
Berg Larsen ‘110-2-x’ Tenor, 1940s Duckbill, Boat tail, (RAC reface)- 0.105″ (Archived)
SOLD - SOUND FILE - Saved by Bob Carpenter (due to a poor refacer), this is one of the rarest of the rare Bergs and it comes with original brass ligature and cap! It was messed up arriving at an unplayable 0.080" but Bob brought it back up to 105! wow. Considering that this mouthpiece was badly altered previously, I can't ask the +$700 that these demand. I will price it at a comparable vintage Berg price. SOUND: It play very bright! I would give it a label of "105-0-L" for custom measurements. The 105 being the tip, the "0" being the very bright baffle tone, and the "L" for the 48mm "long" facing length. Item: WWS2.2S5.11291.5-BC75

Rico ‘Graftonite B5’ Tenor, Black – 0.096″ (Archived)
SOLD - These can be great starter mouthpieces. Rico's description on this new mouthpiece: "RICO ROYAL GRAFTONITE TONE CHAMBERS Tone Chamber Style (A, B, or C): The tone chamber of a mouthpiece is the inside area of the mouthpiece. The size and shape of the tone chamber will change the tone quality of the instrument. The bigger the facing number, the farther back the reed goes before actually touching the mouthpiece. Changing the facing of the mouthpiece will generally change the volume of the instrument. With a shorter facing (3), less of the reed is vibrating, so the instrument will tend to be quieter, with a longer facing (7), more of the reed is vibrating, so the instrument will tend to be louder." Wagner ‘Slimline 3’ Tenor, 1960/70s Slimline, Hard Rubber – 0.065″ (Archived)
SOLD - a really nice hard rubber mouthpiece with no brand logo which was common. It arrived at an original small tip 65. So we can talk about a reface. These have a mild warmth, nice focus, but big tone from the tip. sound is strong in the MID range, response is often great! It has a small baffle and medium side walls. I could pair it with a alto, leather, rovner-like wrap. Item: WWSL4.7W6.12151.6-008
