This is a rare Herbert Couf metal mouthpiece with gold plate, silver original ligature, red grain tooth pad. This was #5 marking, and was since refaced by Bob Carpenter for Sarge to keep. I know Sarge's love of Coufs would certainly have intended it to be a collection piece from the first chance Sarge saw it.
Sarge's Estate notes: "Couf metal, gold plated #5, silver plated lig"
VERSION A vs B?: This next info is my WWS Research an option:
- Version A: often linked to the designs similar to Wagner silver, metal mouthpieces with side-walls. I want to call this a one a "version A - Metal" and possibly add in another name label (made up by me) that ties the "Herbert Couf" script to a [Signature] style or [Artist] model. **Now, this is seen on the "Artist" model; however those are all hard rubber. I have not been able to see or find another example like this one with the red, woodgrain tooth pad--TBD. I also don't know if the gold is original, as Sarge may have plated it himself.
- Version B: If you search around, there is a second style of metal Couf mouthpieces with the 1970s/80s block-style logo. Those have a high baffle with cliff style. This is the vintage 60s/70s style with the side-walls to the low floor. These are seen in a satin silver color, like a bead-blasted, surgical steel look.
LIGATURE: yes - original Couf/Keilwerth single screw.
